What You Can Do With Your Old Coins

Shopping Blog

When you are rummaging through drawers or boxes and find old coins, you should look for way to do something with them. Depending on the type of coins you find, you will have a few options. It is best to learn more about your coins first, so you can figure out what you should do with the coins you have.

Sell the Coins

Before you do anything with the coins you find, it is best to consult a reputable coin dealer in your area. Some coins, even in poor condition can be worth far more than the value printed on the coin.

For example, several types of quarters from the 1930's into the 1950's are worth $30 or more. By taking a small trip to the coin dealer, you could discover that your coins are worth a lot of money.

If the coins have a high value, you can choose to sell them to the dealer. The condition, age and rarity of the coin will influence the amount you will receive.

It is important to note that some coins are worth more even when they are not rare. Coins made from silver and gold are among these types of coins, because the dealers are interested in the metal. In some cases, you may not even realize that the tarnished coin you have is made from solid silver.

Make Jewelry

If it turns out your coins are not worth much, you do have other options. Instead of spending the coins at the store, you can turn them into unique jewelry pieces.

Some of the more common options are to turn them into pendants, watch faces or rings. You need to be aware that making changes to the coin will generally alter the actual value of the coin. However, when you have an interesting looking quarter or nickel, the work may be worth the effort to create a unique piece of jewelry.

Create Unique Artwork

Another way to use older coins is to create unique artwork for your home. For example, you can attach the coins to a wooden frame with some glue to build a decorative picture frame.

Many people have used coins in the past as the focal point for art pieces. If you have the equipment to press the coins, you can thin them out and use the metal pieces for other art projects around your home. With this option, you are only limited by your imagination.

After finding some old coins, you first need to determine their value through a company like American Precious Metals Inc. Once you have this information, you can decide on what you want to do with these coins.
